In August 2024, I was based at the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory in Colorado, where I conducted UAV surveys of yellow-bellied marmot (Marmota flaviventris) hibernacula sites while also coordinating a very high-resolution (0.33 m) WorldView-3 (Maxar Technologies) satellite tasking of the same sites. Yellow-bellied marmots hibernate for 7–8 months each year in high-altitude environments, typically showing strong site fidelity, though burrow locations may be shifting in response to environmental change. This study evaluated the feasibility of detecting shifting marmot hibernacula using a combined approach of UAV surveys and satellite-based remote sensing. A peer-reviewed article documenting the findings is forthcoming.
