In collaboration with the Center for International Forestry Research (CIFOR) and the United Nations FAO Sustainable Wildlife Program, I conducted a UAV wildlife survey in the Simalaha Community Conservancy situated in the Barotse Kingdom, Southern Zambia. The goal of the study was to census several reintroduced species. One of the main challenges we encountered on this survey was figuring out the best UAV flight altitude to avoid disturbing the animals so as not to disrupt natural movement and risk double counting. After the survey, I developed a set of guidelines that recommend optimal UAV flight altitudes based on species-specific audiograms to help minimize disturbances while conducting UAV wildlife surveys.
