I have been involved in several projects using satellite imagery to monitor wildlife in Kenya and Tanzania, including demonstrating the feasibility of automatically detecting blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) using AI and high-resolution satellite imagery (shown in the image). I have also worked on GPS tracking of African savannah elephants (Loxodonta africana), analysing movement patterns in relation to settlements of nomadic pastoralists mapped from satellite imagery via boma locations. In addition, I have led several drone-based projects in Kenya, including tracking and automating behaviour recognition of olive baboons (Papio anubis) as well as similar work on giraffes (Giraffa reticulata), plains zebra (Equus quagga), and Grevy’s zebra (Equus grevyi).
